Photographing Collinsville and the
Collins Factory
two four-hour sessions
$300 (INTRODUCTORY OFFER)
August 15, 2009 and August 22, 2009 (raindate August 23,
2009)
The Collins Company finally closed it's doors
in 1966 after 140 years of tool making on the Farmington River. The old
mill complex is a tangle of canals, narrow roadways, and old mill buildings set
off by a scenic and functional reflecting pool and the rages of the Farmington
River. The old buildings, smoke stacks, and sluiceways will appeal to any
photographer with an interest in industrial artifacts and history. The
town itself is also prized for its 19th century streets little changed from the
days Sam Collins laid them out and built them. Go along on a "digital field trip," with
Lenscapes photographers, Melissa Cherniske and Emery Roth and learn how to
exploit the light and the angles for expressive photo images. Receive
instruction, on-site tips, and share your work to receive direct
feedback.
SESSION 1: We will
assemble at a predetermined place for a pre-field trip workshop covering camera
technique and composition and to answer questions and share ideas. Once in
Collinsville participants will get individual assistance as we seek to get the
most from what nature has provided. We will time our shoot and hope to
catch golden hour and sunset.
SESSION 2: We will
begin with a workshop to answer questions and to share work from the previous
shoot. Participants should bring 10 to 12 jpg image files from the SESSION 1
shoot. Our aim in discussion is to help each photographer find the strengths of
his/her work and set challenges for future shoots. Once again, most of the day
will be spent in the field. After sharing photos we will return to
Collinsville to find out what a new day offers. We will time our shoot and hope
to catch golden hour and sunset.
The following
skills will be addressed in this workshop: • principles of
photography and basics of camera operation, including, where appropriate, manual
exposure settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field) • useful
compositional strategies • selecting the best photo sites and understanding
the many choices available before we click the shutter • understanding and
exploiting qualities of natural light • selecting lenses and understanding
their effects on composition • guidelines for evaluating your own
images
Earn "frequent stalker miles" sign up for any two
workshops.
**** Weather and season will determine specific
locations and final choices, but we will most likely begin at a pair of farms in
Kent.
